“Inside, my soul became so cold I hated everything. I even despised the sun, for I knew I would never be able to play in its warm presence. I cringed with hate whenever I heard other children laughing, as they played outside. My stomach coiled whenever I smelled food that was about to be served to somebody else, knowing it wasn't for me.”
- Dave Pelzer, A Child Called "It"
This passage is significant to the story because it shows how cold hearted Dave became. He was depressed and hated everything including himself because of the abuse he was receiving. Sometimes he did think of himself as a bad kid. The passage is also a very important passage in the story because this was one point in the story that he really felt insecure and discouraged. Dave was always hopeful and thought if he could beat his mother at these sickening games she constantly tried to play with him, he could stop the abuse. At this moment in the story he feels all of it really is his fault, like he really might be a troubled child.
The last impression that should be left with readers is that Dave was always strong but he did brake down for a moment as do others in hard situations in their lives. Although Dave had some bad thoughts he gained back the perseverance to live he had always had.
